September 17, 2008 Lunch

With the high temps finally cooling to double digits, Kiwanians gathered at Harold’s and were greeted by Howard Dicke and Mick Ennis, standing in for David Shirey. John Skarda took care of the invocation, with the house setup efficiently handled for us by, again, John Skarda, Jon Loffman and David Bell.

Club Secretary Gary Hayward was one of the lucky winners of the raffle and he will team next week with the other one, Paul Oves, who just arrived back from New York and points east.

Wellness Report
Bob Leininger made the best kind of wellness report, stating that he had no reports of new illnesses.

Hosts and Guests
Sam Brooks introduced his wife and quipped that he brought her today to help celebrate their second wedding anniversary. Lou Snodgrass’s guest was her daughter Darcy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Golf Tournament
– Co-Chairs Howard Dicke and Bill Scully reported Monday’s Golf Tournament was a big success, with the max of 112 golfers registered and paid. Net proceeds to our Club should be in excess of $22,000. They would like to thank those members that played in the tournament and were sponsors. Also kudos to our Golf Committee for their investment of time as well as other members volunteering on Monday, including Elaine Adrian, Paula Scully, Ida Covi, Seth Jorgensen, Jim Wellington and Mick Ennis.

Flea Market – Phylliss Henry announced that last Saturday’s Flea Market brought in $13,100 plus $4,500 from sale of donated cars. Year to date, this event has generated $95,100 for our youth activities and scholarships. Kirk Wilson read and thanked the members of the Club that volunteered last Saturday and mentioned it will happen again on October 25th.

New Members – Jon Loffman presented two new members for induction. The first was Noah Kendrick, Manager of the Carefree office of Edwards Jones Investments. The second new member welcomed was Steve Gold, owner of the local store “Let There be Light”. Steve commented that he was a twenty year Kiwanian in a prior life in Connecticut.

PROGRAM

Our speaker, Frank Schmuck, spoke on the value of volunteerism and serving others. He is a Past President of the Tempe Nuevo Club and spoke about how a near death medical experience caused him to spend more time exploring possibilities and solving problems that help his fellow citizens. One of several examples he related was working with Arizona state transportation officials to install rubberized asphalt to reduce highway noise. Another was his perseverance in getting a recent amendment passed by Kiwanis International, allowing electronic website voting for annual club officer elections.

He concluded by indicating he enjoys giving an inspiration talk such as this, as a way to make a difference and to help energize others to serve.

Next Week – Next week’s program will be Brian Kunkel presenting awards for the past Club year. Come and see if you are on the list.
