October 8, 2008 Lunch

The meeting kicked off with Richard Saunders leading the group in the Kiwanis Club Song, followed by the Southwest District Pledge, and then a rendition of “America the Beautiful” as only the Carefree Kiwanians can give. Lloyd Meyers assisted the songs on organ. Dave Bell then thanked the setup crew of Max Link, John McBreen, Herb Engdahl and John Skarda, other meeting volunteers, and outside activities such as the fleas. We gave one round of applause for all.

New President = New Ideas...
From now on if your ticket number is drawn, President Dave has asked that you give the club your name and a “one-liner” about yourself in order that the club gets to know you better. In adhering to this request, lucky ticket winners John Skarda informed us that he likes to fish and Bud Hover let us know that he is a new transfer from Denver, Colorado (just a few months actually). One tradition that will carry forward is the ticket winners still have to be there next week to greet us!

Wellness Report:
Lou Snodgrass reported Bob Lewis has been struggling with cancer and, although he won’t be back until Late October, he’d love to hear from us. He can be reached at (515) 490-9293. Bill Rintlemann is said to be “doing okay” and Blaine Keith continues to go through some rough times. Let’s keep them all in our prayers.

Guests:
Father Dart introduced Dr. Jenna Miller, Interim Superintendent of Cave Creek Unified School District, who is a returning guest and will soon be new member.

Announcements:
Big Band Concert: Susan Vanik reminded everyone of the Big Band Concert being held on Friday, November 21st at the Carefree Resort Opera House starting at 5:30 pm. Tickets are still available. See Susan or call 480-488-9650. This is one of hopefully many conjoint functions Kiwanis will be involved in with the community and other charitable organizations. This particular event we’re co-sponsoring with the Desert Foothills Woman’s Club.

Next Week’s Speaker - Oct. 15th: Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Program:
New President Dave Bell took this opportunity to present some of his visions for the next year, as well as to provide the members with information associated Kiwanis.

President Dave indicated that our club is currently sixth in size in Kiwanis International, 20% of our members are women, and we are in the top ten with regard to highest amount of funds raised. He envisions us doing even better next year.

The following is a summary of key points presented by President Dave:

Sound System: We are getting a new sound system - yipppeeeee! It is scheduled to be here next week (October 15th) and anyone interested in seeing how it works be at Harold’s at 10:30 a.m. next Wednesday.

Sundial:
New chair, Tim Pitel, has brought us into the 21st century by creating a web log (aka “blog”) for us on the internet. You can now access the Sundial, as well as other club information, by going directly to carefree-kiwanis-sundial.blogspot.com.

We always want to reduce the costs associated with printing and mailing hard copies of the Sundial. Those who have computers and can print their own copies, please help in letting Michael Moore know that you REALLY don’t need to have one mailed to you each week.

To assist in reporting accuracy, all chairs or anyone making announcements at meetings, are asked to provide the Sundial reporter a short written summary of what they said and please include your name and phone number in case there are any questions. You can also send this information to Tim Pitel at kiwaniscarefree@gmail.com.

Programs/Speakers: Elaine Adrian and Ralph Pipp are the new chairs for this committee. It is their goal to place more emphasis on Arizona businesses for this year’s programs, as well as Arizona education and some 501(c)3 presentations. They are asking members to please let them know if they have someone in mind to speak this year.

Phone Lines Available: Committee chairs please be advised there are additional phone lines available for use if needed for upcoming functions. Please contact Phylliss Henry 575- 8407 for more information. (Ed Jensen is on vacation and can be consulted upon return.)

Builder’s Club: Kathy Haugner continues to seek members who are interested in spending a few hours of their time assisting in the Builder’s Club program. It really does not require much more than being present for the kids and it is for a very good cause!!! See Kathy 488-8315 for more information.

Available Information: Copies of the Committee Chair List, Club Calendar and Phone List are now available at the front table for those who did not receive them via e-mail (see Gary Hayward or Janie French).

Many Thanks to reporter Janie French and photographer JJ Devito for their efforts in producing this issue of the Sundial.
