Volume XXXVI No. 7
On this Veteran’s Day celebratory lunch, we thank George Schmid, Bob McBreen and Richard Saunders for being here to greet us and take our money, as well as Max Lynx, Herb Engdahl, Chuck Hoch, and the entire set up crew for preparing the room. Jim Shaw delivered a thoughtful invocation, which was followed by Richard Saunders and Lloyd Meyer leading us through America the Beautiful. As lunch was being served, we celebrated the Veterans in our club by having them stand while singing their appropriate military hymns.
In honor of this celebration, Nancy Carpenter decorated our tables and set a special table with five place settings – each setting representative of the five branches of our Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Wellness Report – Lou Snodgrass was happy to report that Blaine was doing better and, as far as she knew, everyone else was doing just fine.
Publicity Chair - We still need a Kiwanis Publicity Chair. Let Dave Bell know if your are interested.
Big Band Night at the Carefree Resort Opera House – Susan Vanik reported although 225 people have already signed up for Big Band Night on November 21st, there are still a few seats available. Call 480-488-9650 for tickets and information.
Carefree Christmas Festival – Gary Hayward announced that a new Christmas tradition will begin this year in Carefree with a three day festival Friday – Sunday, December 12 – 14. Details on this event can be obtained at http://www.carefreechristmasfestival.com/
Our club is participating by building Santa’s “Grotto” – actually a house – where children can visit with Santa during the festival. This house should be ready by next week and will have a mailbox near it at the town amphitheater. Children can “mail” letters to Santa and, if they enclose an addressed and stamped envelope, they will receive a reply from one of Santa’s elves. Santa’s elves are Key Clubbers led by Manny Gonzales. In past year’s the Key Club members have helped decorate the town.
Manny, experienced as playing Santa, will play the part again at the festival. Photos of the children and Santa will be available for a donation to our Foundation.
Kid’s Christmas – Kid’s Christmas will be different this year. It will be more inclusive. Already Jim Shaw as Chair of the Salvation Army committee, David Shirey as President of Food Bank, and Elaine Adrian as FCF’s Community Ed group are compiling lists of children who will need presents – including age, gender and size for clothing where necessary.
This year we will accept check or cash donations from members who wish to help but don’t like shopping, wrapping and/or bringing to meetings. These funds will be used specifically for buying presents, possibly clothing, even food for families in our community with children in need.
Members interested in helping, please contact Michael Moore at 595-6480.
Road Clean Up – Richard Saunders reminded everyone (even those who didn’t sign up but want to join in) that the Clean Up Crew will be meeting this Saturday, November 15th at the Flea Market. The official clean up starts at 8:00, but coffee and doughnuts will be available beforehand.
Pancake Breakfast – Brian Kunkel indicated they are still putting together all the figures from last week’s breakfast and promises to provide a full report next week. He did state that over 700 people were served.
Science Workshop – Jim Walborn shared that many “kudos” were given from 11 of the 24 teachers involved in the September 10 Science Workshop that was led by Paula Scully and assisted by Elaine Adrian, with presentations from Ron Ireland, Burt Lundquist and Jim Walborn. Although not read at the meeting, some of the kudos were, “Big improvement in this workshop from last year,” “Appreciated the other Kiwanis committee members to explain the (Science Fair) process,” and “Great direction to teach higher learning to our students.” See Jim for a full list of the kudos.
Annual Christmas Party – See the attached flyer below for information regarding this year's Christmas Holiday Luncheon.
Holiday Home Tour & Boutique – Kathy Haugner reminded everyone of the Holiday Home Tour and Boutique being held November 14-16, sponsored by the Foothills Community Foundation. Call 480-488-1090 for tickets and information.
Please remember to have your announcements in writing to give to the week's reporter for publication in the Sundial.
PROGRAM:
Our program was dedicated to Veteran’s Day and to honor those who have served in our military forces.
Our guest speaker, Jack Ratterree, was born and raised in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. He attended the Interllochen Music Camp--Graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and played for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Jack served in the U.S. Army as a clarinetist stationed in Fort Meyer, Virginia, and played the clarinet in the Presidential Band which performed often at the White House. He described playing during the opening of Dulles International Airport and how he was almost "kicked in the head" by then President, John F. Kennedy (accidentally, of course). He later taught Music at ASU, and was Principal clarinetist with the Phoenix Symphony for 38 years.
We were also honored to have six of our club members share some of their memories while serving in our Armed Forces. These Veterans included Carl Nagel (ARMY), Al Birkelbach (COAST GUARD), Tom Rycroft (ARMY), Ralph Pipp (ARMY), Carroll Vanik (ARMY) and Lloyd Meyer (ARMY), all of whom gave a piece of themselves while fighting for our Freedom and were kind enough to share a bit of that with us today.
From all of us to all of you .... THANK YOU!

Thanks much to reporter Janie French and photographer Elaine Adrian for helping make this issue of the Sundial.
