November 19, 2008 - Lunch

Volume XXXVI No. 8

While enjoying Chamber of Commerce weather, Kiwanians gathered at Harold’s and were greeted by John Rogers and George Schmid. Max Link and his crew efficiently prepared our meeting room today. David Shirey gave a thoughtful invocation, and Richard Saunders and Lloyd Meyer took care of the musical duties.
Dave Fisher and Susan Vanik were the lucky winners of the raffle and will team as greeters at our next meeting.

Wellness Report - Lou Snodgrass quipped that apparently she wasn’t doing her job very well as she is not aware of any members that are sick.

Hosts and Guests – Linda Bliss hosted Dolly Kennedy, Elaine Adrian had Evelyn Holbrook as a guest and Dave Bell introduced Steele Coddington and Ron Grove. John Abram brought his wife Kay and Ernest Varius was the guest of Hugh Stevens.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Specials Meals – President Dave reminded members of the schedule for calling Harold’s for the purpose of ordering a special meal for one of our regular meetings. The call must be made no later than Monday evening. Tuesday is too late to assure you will have a special meal available.

Board Meeting – Dave Bell summarized several highlights from the Club Board Meeting yesterday. Eight new members were approved and a decision was made to have an appreciation day lunch next Spring, inviting those outside the Club that help us make our events successful. The Board also accepted the Library’s invitation to an evening with Barry Goldwater, Jr., that would be for our members and guests. Date is to be determined.

Christmas/Holiday Luncheon – Ted Dimon is taking reservations for this annual event, being held on December 10th at the beautiful facility in Desert Mountain. An invitation, with details, was included with last week’s Sundial.

Pancake Breakfast – Brian Kunkel thanked his Co-Chair Jon Loffman and those members that helped make the November 8th event a big success. The net proceeds to the Club will be in excess of $5,000 and Brian requests any members who have not turned in their ticket sale proceeds to promptly do so.

Road Clean Up – Richard Saunders thanked the 19 volunteers that turned out to help with this community activity last weekend.

Publicity Chair - We still need a Kiwanis Publicity Chair. Let Dave Bell know if you are interested.

Bell Ringing – ’Tis the season and Jim Shaw asked that we sign up for a two hour shift at one of the local venues. The Salvation Army is seeing extra demands on their resources with the economic slowdown and everything we collect in the kettles stays in our community.

Kid’s Christmas Event – Chair Michael Moore indicated that this year, members can help in three ways, including the traditional way of buying and wrapping a gift for a selected child. Or money can be contributed for other member volunteers to purchase a gift and wrap it.

PROGRAM
The speaker was our own Dr. Debbi Burdick, who is the interim Superintendent of the Cave Creek School District. She explained Project Based Learning (PBL) being used in the District, where the teacher sets parameters and then acts as a facilitator. Students produce a product for a learning project, often involving the use of video and other graphics. It emphasizes problem solving skills and collaboration with other students, rather than the traditional model of students sitting at their desks and memorizing to learn. PBL stresses thinking rather than rote responses.
Our speaker listed several things that are involved with PBL, including in depth investigation, research, following student’s interests and allowing for student decision making. One program offered is entrepreneurship, where students can run their own businesses, or become apprentices and serve internships. The district is striving to listen to what work skills businesses expect in the 21st century.

In response to a question, Dr. Burdick explained how the district receives their funding from the state, etc. and why they found it necessary to put the recent budget override on the ballot. Failure of that measure is, unfortunately, putting more pressure on increasing class size.
Next Meeting – The next meeting will be on December 3rd. Speaker Major Doug Danielson, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army, will discuss where the money goes. No regular meeting on November 26th but there will be some tables reserved for Kiwanians at lunch time.

Many thanks to reporter Howard Dicke and photographers Elaine Adrian and Kirk Wilson for helping make this issue of the Sundial available.
