December 3, 2008 - Lunch

Volume XXXVI No. 9

Another great day. Our greeters were George Schmid and Carroll Vanik. Our invocation was given by Jayne Hubbard. Our “club song” was greeted with a mixed reaction. “America the Beautiful” led by Richard Saunders was followed by the Pledge.

Chuck Hoch won the drawing – know that he rides mules. Kathy Haugner came in 2nd – know that she “Loves Lucy” because Lucy came from her hometown of Jamestown.

Lists have been prepared differently by local organizations such as our Salvation Army and Food Bank.

SPEAKER
Jim Shaw, head of our Salvation Army Extension Unit, introduced our speaker Major Doug Danielson. Major Danielson is head of the SW District that includes AZ, NM, a tip of Texas and a bit of NV.

Major Danielson first recognized Lee Lange for his 18 years of service, including his current guidance to 20 Extension Units. He also thanked the Kiwanians for all the service they have provided over the many years, and will provide in the future.

We may associate the Salvation Army with “bell ringing” at Christmas, but it is year round service helping those in need. Funds raised in our area stay in our area. We raised about $25,000/year in recent years. An apparent “dip” in the data was caused by Anthem splitting off. Funds are used here to send kids to summer camp - a life changing experience for many of them. Funds are used to help over tough times, paying utility bills, medical, clothing, housing. Unfortunately in these bad economic times registrations are up 50%. There is significantly more need, even here.

This past Thanksgiving about 10,000 dinners were provided in Phoenix – about 7,000 meals were delivered to the home of seniors and shut-ins.
