With unseasonably warm temps, Kiwanians gathered at Harold’s and were greeted by Ralph Pipp and Mick Ennis. Max Link and his crew efficiently prepared our meeting room today. Wayne Knops gave a thoughtful invocation, and Richard Saunders and Lloyd Meyer took care of the musical duties. In the absence of President Dave, Manny Gonzales got some practice in running the meeting.

Policy for “no shows” at Club Special Events – At the December Board meeting, it was noted the Club sometimes has a problem with members signing up for a Club special event, where there is a fee, and then not attending the event. Often times the Club must commit, to the event venue, for the number of attendees and pay the venue business based on that commitment. Thus the Board established the following policy: If a member does not cancel their reservation within seven (7) calendar days of a special event for which the Club will be billed, the member must pay (will be billed) for the cost of the event for which they signed up to attend.
Western Night – Jacquie Goodspeed indicated the date for this event is April 18th.
PROGRAM
Our speaker was Dr. Jack Schaefer who presented an enlightening program about the year he recently spent on the staff of a hospital in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. He explained some history on how the country became dominated by Islam and Islamic law. Dr. Schaefer pointed out that most of the population is Muslim and the Quran basically serves as the constitution of the country and there is no separation of church and state.
Our speaker mentioned that he occasionally came in contact with the religious police, who help enforce Islamic law, as stated in the Quran. This even prevented he and his wife from entering a restaurant together. Women must enter separately through a side door. Doctors were also prevented from sitting with female nurses during a coffee break.
Dr. Schaefer explained that access to the country and travel within are tightly controlled. He had to surrender his U.S. passport for an Arabic passport while in the country. Any expatriate that seriously violates Islamic law is expelled from the country. Before our speaker could leave, his record was checked to see if the government had any reason to detain him. Only then was his passport returned.
Next Meeting – The program will be Michael Kissida speaking on the subject of Global Business.
