PROGRAM
Our speaker was James Middleton, a Professor at ASU, who spoke on the subject:
Promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education in Arizona.
Mr. Middleton outlined several problems in Arizona, including underachieving students, a general anti-intellectual bias coupled with excessive glorification of athletic skills, high drop out rates and shortage of teachers. Annual STEM teacher shortages in our state are 400 high school math teachers and 250 science teachers. He advocates incentives to counteract this shortage, such as student loan forgiveness and tax credits to businesses that support employees changing their career to teaching. Our speaker reminded us that investing in education will pay dividends on many fronts.
Other innovations possible are distance learning, where students are transported to learn from the best teachers and using technology to transmit teaching to more remote school districts. Our speaker is big on trying to get STEM savvy non teachers involved as tutors. Such tutoring should be a part of the curriculum rather than just for students having learning problems. Perhaps companies could partner with school districts and use job sharing, where an employee spends a portion of their time teaching STEM subjects.
Mr. Middleton indicated that ASU is working on ways to make money from use of the resources of the University system rather than depending only on the State educational budget and tuition. One example mentioned was partnering with Elderhostel to use facilities of the University.
Next Meeting – The program will be Kent Frizon speaking about the effect of AZ state budget cuts on CCUSD.
