Announcements – Ted Dimon reminded us about Western Night on April 18th. There have been a few cancellations, so contact George and Joan Hofer at 480-488-1980 if you are interested in tickets.
Jon Loffman and Brian Kunkel made a report on last week’s rainy Pancake Breakfast. The unofficial estimate is that over 400 people were served and 55 Kiwanis members contributed to the breakfast. Brian went above and beyond the call of duty by ensuring the acquisition of a 30’x 30’ tent the previous night. This proved to be an insightful move as the rain would have certainly washed out the breakfast. We also would like to thank Dave Anderson of the Cave Creek Coffee Cup for providing the coffee free of charge. And thank you to the Tonto bar and grill for providing pancakes and sausage at cost.
Phylliss Henry announced our next Flea Market event will be held May 23rd. This will be the final Flea Market until September. Please bring your “stuff” and help make this another great event.

Kiwanian Debbi Burdick introduced our speaker Dr. Kent Frizon. Dr. Frizon is the Associate Superintendent of Operations and Finance for the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD). He is the self described “Chief Bean Counter” for the school district and provided us with an overview of how the school districts are funded in Arizona, where the money comes from, and how the money is spent.
Dr Frizon’s presentation included an explanation that the budget is based on the amount of revenue available from the primary and secondary property taxes, grants, and donations, and the number of children in the district. He described the weighting function used to establish the number of students, as well as the funds used to make the money available to the districts.
With 6,000 students, 700 employees and a $35M budget, CCUSD is a leader in the state in terms of the cost per student year of education. Additionally, the test scores indicate the CCUSD students are performing at the highest levels in the state.
Please watch the video recordings below of Dr. Frizon’s presentation.
